Hello, I am not happy at all with this product, with Amazon, or the seller. As I purchased this item to setup my wireless internet at home. It sat in the box for 40 days as it took that long for my wireless company to get my satelite to me and setup. Then on the day to set it up I’m told by the Tech that this item is not compatible and I could not use it. When I asked the seller to refund my monie - they indicated it was over 30 days and they could not, nor would Amazon help me….so I am very unhappy as I am a long time customer that has spent my fair share of monies on Amazon and the first time I need help everyone jumps ship…so I rate this over all experience very poor, with poor customer service….and just over all BAD. Thanks but no thanks.

Bought this to add to my wireless-wired home network. I have used a Netgear FWAG114 along with a Netgear WG302 access point, and several D-Link gaming adapters to connect 7 computers running a variety of systems along with a Slingbox and 2 laptops. Sytems include Vista, XP Pro, Win2000, Win2000 Server and Suse 10.2 (linux). I like the Netgear Pro series as they seem to be more robust and are fairly easy to configure and handle security really well.

Connected the FVW318, logged in and set up the WPA security, set my rules for VNC (Windows and one for Linux), HTML, FTP, Slingbox and opened the ports. Set security for the highest level of WPA I could. I can have as many as 15 different wireless systems in my neighborhood broadcasting at any given moment so security and ability to connect to my wireless is very important to me.

I replaced the FWAG114 with the FVG318 and after configuring it, it connected immediately. My WG302 is on the lower floor and is connect by POE. Once I booted both up the connection has been flawless for the last 48 hours. I am on Comcast and my connection is at a blazing 19,880 kbs (2485 KB/sec) down and 2485 kbs (196.9 KB/sec) up.

I have read many reviews that rate this router as bad. User became easily frustrated with all the dropped connections and poor performance. But I have found that configuring it right the first time is the most important step in getting it to work.

Configuration was easy and straight forward. Of, course, you must know how to configure your rules and set the ports. Some probably buy this router thinking it is plug and play and it is not. First thing I did was download the current firmware from Netgear and install it before doing anything. Bugs are generally eliminated with upgrades.

I must be lucky with my Netgear products. I started years ago with the Netgear RT314 router and now use Netgear exclusively. I have family that come to visit in their motor homes and I assign them logons and they can connect wirelessly from around 75 feet away.

I give this router 5 stars as it has performed flawlessly so far. I run Rosetta@Home (shared computing helping to determine the 3-dimensional shapes of proteins in research that may ultimately lead to finding cures for some major human diseases) on all of my computers and a good connection 24/7 is of most importance to me, plus, I love wireless computing.

If you buy the FVG318 read the manual that is on the CD thoroughly before you start the configuration. I will post a follow up review after a month or so to let you know if I still really like my FVG318.

The Worst Case Scenario: How To Protect Your Data

Just another day, doing as you always do with your computer. Making documents, working on your finances, updating your family’s website or conducting your home or online business.

Suddenly, strange errors start appearing, your computer makes loud scratching sounds and then, nothing.

A hard drive crash can mean much more than the loss of a part of your computer. Often this is the primary place for storage of your information, family photos, work related files, favorite mp3s and other things that have often taken months if not years to make.

The loss of an operating system like Windows is not as serious, you have the disk already, all your programs are on CD, but your personal information needs to be protected by you.

What steps need to be taken to make sure that such a loss does not occur?

The actual idea of data protection is not new, but still many people only face it’s reality when it’s too late.

The most essential basic steps are as follows:

  • Virus protection software
  • Personal firewall if you use the internet
  • Save personal files to CD or DVD

Virus protection and firewall software will protect you from attacks that can destroy software and your files. Saving files to another place makes sure there is a permanent record of all those things you need. The more frequent you save elsewhere the less you will lose in case of disaster.

All of the above protect you from loss of software due to some programming, but other things can cause data loss too.

The other things are hardware related, meaning that the actual place the files are stored is damaged or destroyed.

Some things that could cause hardware failure or loss are

  • Lightning strike
  • Theft
  • Hard drive failure

Lightning is very hard to protect from. The very fact that it is such a powerful force means that the most basic of lightning protectors could not protect from a direct strike. True protection for this costs a lot and is very often not preventable. If you live in a region with frequent strikes, take greater care in backing up frequently to a somewhere and perhaps even moving that informatino to another site.

Theft happens from time to time, once your computer is gone, there is not too much hope of getting it back.

Hard drive failures are when the drive itself fails due to some internal problems or any of the preceding physically harmful events.

All of these are quite horrible but what can be done to prevent it.

Backups have been and will continue to be the best way. If you have a copy of something in two places there is always another one if worst comes to worst.

Another option that is becoming more and more sensible and cost-effective is a RAID hard drive array. This basically means that two hard drives work together as a pair, mirroring the data, each being and exact copy of the other one. So if one fails, the other one takes over and the defective one can be replaced.

And finally, if you do face the loss of a hard drive, there are data recovery experts. For a fairly large fee they will open your hard drive and try to recover what was on it. Never attempt to open and fix yourself as the inside of the hard drive is a contaminent free space, with zero dust, even a few particles can make the drive unrepairable.

So make sure you’re not the next one to get an unpleasant surprise and make sure that you are well protected from the loss of your all important information.

"SSL VPN - Understanding, evaluating and planning secure, web-based remote access" - the only thing wordy about this book is its title. The rest of the book delivers information clearly and concisely through text, diagrams and examples. "Hacker Bob" animates key passages to keep things from getting dry.

As expected, the audience for this book is techies. Basic network concepts are explained, so anyone with a technical background will understand. Any network fundamentals quickly lead to SSL VPN applications.

The authors are good about explaining "why" and providing the pros/cons of a decision. Key criteria are also provided for both technical and business decisions. I found one of the most valuable parts to be about bad architectures. The authors illustrate several common architectures and point out weaknesses. The focus on diagrams and flow was quite useful.

Hard Disk Drives: 3.5&quot Or 2.5&quot? (Part 2)

Since we’ve dispelled a few myths, let’s discuss how a 2.5 system might benefit you.

2.5 Drives: The Benefits

Small Spaces

I currently have 4-3.5 hard drives in my computer. Hopefully I didn’t make you fall out of your chair. I don’t have a RAID setup (don’t worry about that term if you don’t know what it is). All I have are 4 independently operating drives. The computer case I have is a full tower, 24 (H) x 18 (D) x 8 (W). Even with this size of a case, the insides are not ideal. I have cables going all over the place, nesting not too far from the hard drives. The heat build-up is a problem at times, especially in the summer months. Since I have 4-80mm fans running, in addition to 2 processor fans going, the case stays relatively cool. However, the noise generated is definitely noticeable if I’m away from home for an extended period of time then come back. In fact, many friends who come over to visit mention how loud my computer is. Most of the noise is generated by the fans pulling air into and pushing it out of the computer case.

Due to the size of a 2.5 drive, four 2.5 disks can be stacked in a space that one 3.5 drive occupies. Now, this is something to think about. The reason why computer cases are so large, is partially due to the option of putting several drives in it. Many computer users today have two drives. The number of Two-Drive owners is increasing mostly because of the inexpensive prices of the drives themselves. If you do some smart shopping, you’ll end up with a very nice rebate. From time to time I do some searching on the net for some great bargains, and present those deals to DigitalDingus website viewers, so this is another option for you. Just imagine how much space you could save if you only had two 80GB 2.5 hard drives.

2.5 Form Factor Is Pretty Fast

For some people, having the fastest drive is required. PC Gaming enthusiasts are loading their games on 10,000RPM drives along with $500 video cards and so forth without a second thought. There are 2.5 drives reaching the 10,000RPM mark, but they cost around $800USD. So currently, a very fast 2.5 HDD is out of reach for most consumers. For commercial interests, 2.5 form factor drives are becoming more of an option. What you have to ask yourself, is how fast is fast to you. I’ve tested 5400RPM drives and I was very impressed with the speed ratings and real-life performance with running appplications. Yes, you can read reviews on how fast a drive performs till you get a headache. However, I’m still a little hesitant to judge a drive based on millisecond differences, especially when so much of a drive’s performance is regulated by the software application, browser, plugins, and so on.

Less Heat

2.5 hard drives do not give off as much heat as a 3.5 drive. They are also much less noisy. I can say this definitively, because I’ve personally reviewed a few 2.5 drives myself. I highly recommend Fujitsu drives because they’ve been in the business of pioneering small form factor storage systems and in my opinion, are paving the way towards smaller computer systems for the common user. Few companies are trying to make 2.5 drives as fast and common as 3.5 like Fujitsu is.

Low Power Requirements

2.5 drives also have much less power consumption, and it’s common for a 2.5 drive to run on only 10% of what a 3.5 drive requires. This is very important, as a higher power consumption, translates into a higher chance of failure. Unfortunately, the more power current you have flowing through a particular device, the more chance for error. And when we’re talking about computer components which are the most sensitive to electrical currents, the importance of low power consumption becomes clear.

2.5 Might Be For You

If you’re not too concerned about having the fastest hard drive on the planet, but are more interested in finding a way to create a low heat, low power, and smaller space requirement computer system, the 2.5 form factor just might be for you.

In the future, more articles which deal specifically with building 2.5 systems will be featured. Be sure to make DigitalDingus articles a part of your normal surfing routine.

USB Connectors

Today communication and technology have reached new heights. Various types of electrical devices can be connected to laptops, computers and mobile phones. A special port is installed in these devices from where a USB connector is attached. The other end of the port is connected to external devices such as printers and scanners.

USB is an abbreviation for Universal Serial Bus. USB connectors are used to connect different types of USB cables with all standard compatible USB ports. USB cables are primarily used for data transfer. Data transfer speeds may vary from 12 Mbps in version 1.1 and up to 480 Mbps in version 2.0. USB ports can be also used to connect numerous computer accessories by substituting their particular cables with USB connectors.

USB connectors are available in various configurations. These are widely used to connect two different USB products. They can also be used to connect peripherals to other standard port types. USB connectors provide connectivity to different systems and make possible transfer and translation of data between two separate USB ports.

Among the various types of USB connectors available in the market, the most popular ones are serial to USB connectors, parallel to USB connectors, RJ11 USB connectors and USB Ethernet connectors. Several of these connectors can be mounted directly onto PC boards and are often called USB motherboard connectors or internal USB connectors. However, this variety takes up space and is cumbersome to install.

Panel USB connectors do not need to be mounted upon the PC board. These are attached to the front of the PC board and are also known as USB front panel connectors and front USB connectors. Connectors are designed in definite male-to-male or female-to-female adapters. These may also be made to order as per requirements. Straight and right angle connector types are also available for specific needs.

Radio GaGa: How To Listen To Internet Radio

You will discover a few hundred radio stations from across the planet covering a number of different categories to choose from ? rap, rock, ambient, electronica and reggae, to name but a few. These are called ’streams’, as they are digital transmissions despatched to your machine using the internet.

iTunes radio is easy

1.To take a look at what’s available you simply need to click on the Radio button in the iTunes Source menu bar on the left of the iTunes interface. This takes you to a list of categories, each with a right-pointing arrow on the left-hand side of the category description. To explore a category you simply need to click on the arrow beside its description.

Each available radio station offers its name, a brief description of the kind of music the show plays and information about the bit-rate of the transmission. Higher bit rates mean a channel is broadcast over the internet at better quality than lower bit-rate streams.

They also require more bandwidth, so if you’re using a dial-up modem to connect to the internet, you’ll get a better experience by choosing low bit-rate streams. If you’re accessing the channels using broadband, you needn’t worry.

2.Apple updates the radio channels it makes available through iTunes from time to time. If you want to ensure that your channel list is up to date, you just need to refresh the list. To do this, select ‘Radio’ in the menu, and then click on the ‘Refresh’ button situated in the upper-right corner of iTunes. The software will show you a brief message, while it interrogates Apple’s servers in the large window at the top of the browser, which shows a black apple logo. After this process is complete, your list will be current.

3.Navigating the hundreds of channels Apple offers can become a chore, but just like any other content held in iTunes, you can create playlists containing your favourite shows. All you need to do is create and name a new playlist, and drag and drop your hand-picked collection of radio channels to the playlist you have created. All radio channels are identified by radio icons that sit at the left-hand side of their names. It’s a series of four curved lines that decrease to a point, and looks to some imaginations a little like a tree.

Adding compatible channels

1.First of all you need the URL for the radio stream. This isn’t always the same URL of the channel’s website, but it will usually be included within the link to the broadcast. As these sometimes direct radio listeners to a third-party ISP that handles the radio streaming, the easiest way to identify the URL is iTunes itself.

2.If you’ve managed to find the correct URL for the stream, you just need to navigate to the ‘Advanced’ drop-down menu. Select it and choose ‘Open Stream’ in the menu that appears. After few moments, the radio show should start in iTunes and will be visible in your library listing. If you like what you’re hearing you just need to drag and drop the stream description from your library into your own personal radio playlist as you can’t add it to the iTunes radio directory. Helpfully, iTunes automatically adds the radio station to your library, so you can listen to it in the future but it’s even better if you add it to your personal radio playlist as it will be easier to find there.

3.If you can’t find, or aren’t certain of, the streams’ URL, just launch the channel you have found so it begins playing in iTunes. Now navigate to your library listing, look for the radio icon, and check it matches your new channel’s name. if it does, all you need now to do is drag and drop it into your personal playlist, so you can access it at leisure in future from within iTunes.

iTunes and the radio star

To expand the available list of radio shows, you need to enable iTunes to play internet radio shows you find using your browser. To do this you need to launch iTunes, and navigate to ‘Preferences’ in the drop-down iTunes menu. A screen will appear which shows a series of tabbed options, select ‘Advanced’.

The menu is divided into three zones. The setting you need to apply is about half-way down. It’s called ‘Use iTunes for internet music playback’ and you’ll see a ‘Set’ button to the right of its name. Click on this, and iTunes will be set to play internet music streams by default.

In future, when you click on a link to an online radio channel your browser will automatically launch iTunes to play the show. This also means that when you come across a channel that iTunes supports you’ll know about it.

Easy but incomplete

What about radio stations that aren’t included within the iTunes list?

Apple’s media player can handle any QuickTime-supported format, but the fact is that so many online radio channels choose the incompatible Windows Media Player, or Real Player formats.

It’s incredibly frustrating that these broadcasters don?t choose to implement true cross-platform broadcasting support. The BBC last year said that demand for adding such support wasn’t sufficient to justify the investment. If you’re an iPod-toting iTunes warrior, you should write to broadcasters and demand parity. Or get a DAB radio.

It’s also disappointing because the sad truth is that you cannot easily access these channels through iTunes. It is, of course, possible to record them using software that can convert the shows to an iPod-happy format, but it may not seem worth the effort.

Thousands of Channels

If you want to access more channels than iTunes will support, Griffin Technology’s radio ‘Shark’ is the perfect partner. The device is compatible with Macs and PCs and can record any AM or FM radio broadcast in real time. It’s programmable, and lets you pause a show and return to it at a later time (time-shifting), and transfer any recorded broadcast to iTunes and an iPod.

The company will soon ship its TuneCenter iPod dock. This remote controlled dock connects to a TV or stereo system, shows what you’re playing on television, and has built-in WiFi connectivity. That last feature means the dock will happily access thousands of pre-programmed channels of internet radio over your wireless connection, all of which you can navigate through on the TV screen using the remote control.

Very easy to setup. Not a entrprise class vpn solution but works great for a small office.

Review date : 2007-07-12
Since they first came out, I have set up several of these for customers. This one happened to be for my office. Once set up, they are great. The biggest problem is the tech support people. Slow to respond, foreign accent, and bad attitudes. Figure on 4 to 6 hours between hold time and the time necessary to work through any issues with the tech support people. The documentation is useless. I have never been able to get some of the features to work such as remotely running Word or Excel. I might be able to figure it out if I had the time, but I really don’t.

They have also been somewhat unreliable. I suggest that you immediately register the product before installing it. Then when you do have to call tech support to set it up, it will be somewhat easier. When you register you are offered an extended service plan. BUY IT! If your device fails, you get overnight delivery of a replacement. It also provides access to better tech support, and you get tech support for several years instead of 90 days.

This is a good product and works as advertised - with one small flaw. If you’re an Apple Mac user, you’ll only be able to use it if you’re running a PowerPC Mac. Due to a compilation problem in the VPN client Java library by Netgear, the SSL VPN client will not run on an Intel based Mac (even through Rosetta).

If you’re planning to use this with an Intel Mac - wait for a firmware upgrade from Netgear otherwise you’ll just be staring at a useless blue box with a flashing green light!
