Review GoodSync Software - Ideal for USB and other Device Synchronization

Synchronization software sounds like a utility which seems valuable and worth-while, but many software packages fail on execution because the user interface isn’t logical or you get conflict errors with the device. So, to compile features which are intuitive enough to use without difficulty, yet perform the task of synchronizing files and folders would be a dream, and GoodSync accomplished this task. The utility is easy to understand, loads of information at your finger-tips and a logical flow to using the software.

Our tests where focused on USB mass storage devices like flash drives and MP3 players and how they sync with a host computer. Installation of GoodSync is a snap, a quick download (2MBs), short install and your ready to synchronize. GoodSync has default help balloons which guild you through the sync set-up for a “job” with pointing you towards the source location, then directing you towards the destination location for the sync process.

What we like most about the GoodSync software is the information provided before, during and after a sync process takes place. This provides a clear understanding of what is about to happen and if there is trouble, GoodSync records all data changed in their embedded database for post-sync access (just in case). A hot button, “Analyze” can be used before a sync takes place to list the differences between one source and another. GoodSync provides an easy, graphical tool, to command the utility on what to-do with missing files, replacing files and priority “source” files. In addition, you can propagate deletions or propagate modifications in either sync direction or bi-directional. Another clear feature of GoodSync is the summary layout which provides a high-level view of new files, unchanged files and all files that where either analyzed or synchronized. The high-level view can be drilled down for more detailed information. During several sync tests, the CPU was just under 20% usage so it was easy to perform the sync process while listening to music, checking email and surfing the web. Of course, what would a utility be without a log and GoodSync provides a detailed log (optional setting) one what transpired during the sync process.

The utility allows synchronizing over a network and uses a proprietary algorithm so it doesn’t rely on file system accuracy or network stability during the sync process, thus insuring no data loss between sources. GoodSync has several powerful features which we even had a hard time understanding the application, but it’s there. GoodSync can be used to analyze changed information every ‘x’ minutes and sync or can instantly sync when flagged files or folders record a change. In addition, one can use the Windows scheduling tool to start sync or back-up jobs (one way sync). Since the personal version of the software is free we did a spam scan on the software and found no spyware, adware or malware. A PRO version is available for corporate, business and government use. It appears the PRO version is the same with the added feature of performing multiple jobs at the same time. Cost is under $20.

Finally, the options and preferences set-up window provides an excellent overview of what features will do and when or how they are used. If every software package was this detailed, thorough and well written as GoodSync, life would be much easier for most. In conclusion, GetUSB.info believes this is an excellent product and should be apart of anyone who uses multiple devices and requires sync software to keep up-to-date. We honestly tried to find issues, but couldn’t - and thus give it one BIG thumbs-up.

Email Server Software

For an email server to work properly, it has to have the email server software to efficiently process the transfer of electronic mail messages from point to point.

By Definition

A mail server is a host of applications designed to process emails sent by clients to recipients, either on the same servers or transmitted via outside server computers. It is where the whole work of “sorting” and delivering, plus storage of mails are all done.

The first of its kind was the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), which is the standard protocol set for email transmission. It is a simple text-based protocol where mail recipients are already specified, and then the text message is transmitted over to them.

But with the creation of POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) and IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol), the SMPT was somehow dwarfed. The POP3 works primarily by retrieving emails from remote servers directly. While the IMAP works in the same manner, though the user can still have the web sources available, even if they are offline.

Tips in Choosing the Appropriate Email Server Software for You

Choosing which email server software is right for you can be a real feat, especially with all the resources you find on the web or in your local shops. Thus, to help you narrow down your options, here are some basic tips to keep in mind.

Key Point 1

Software comes jam-packed with specific services for personal and business needs. That’s why it is much wiser to determine first the main purpose of the software before going all out on your search.

Key Point 2

You will fare better if you conduct your search online. The Internet has lots to offer when it comes to search results for server software available for your own application.

Key Point 3

The most important tip to remember is to go for the software that has the services you need. You can choose the one that provides easy installation, spam and virus protection, and specialized tools for hosting and converging of all your email accounts. Or you can go for the software that allows you access even on remote networks, server protection that has a step-by-step verification to ensure you will be protected from unauthorized us,; and a whole lot more.

Follow these guidelines and you are well on your way to finding the email servers software designed specifically for your needs.

The Pros and Cons of VoIP Protocol Which VoIP System Makes Sense

Well, the starting point in discussing the pros and cons of VoIP protocol is cost! Switching to VoIP and using it as your primary phone system can save you between 30 and 50 percent or more on your monthly phone bill over your conventional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) system! This is significant for all of us who are disenchanted with our local phone companies and all of their mysterious charges that simply drain our pocketbooks!

We as consumers now have choices of VoIP carriers that offer top services as well as very low costs for unlimited calling with all
of the included bells and whistles that you can imagine, like caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, voice mail and more that we are used to.

The list of pros is long for the use of a VoIP system, so let us keep going! With VoIP you can also port (keep your number and move it to your VoIP company) your present phone number. Your voice mail messages are also sent to your e-mail and you can listen to those messages no matter where you are in the world by logging into your e-mail account. There are also VoIP carriers who specialize in offering internet connections all over the world for the travelers among us who need to stay connected while at the airport or other locations away from home. Video mail is also a new feature that is now available through many VoIP carriers. So, now you can see your callers!

Clarity is another big plus! Clarity has improved very much over the past several years and a VoIP call is now several times clearer than a conventional phone! You will be very pleased that it sounds like your caller is standing right in front of you.
Of course you can call any type of phone system in the world from your VoIP system or vice-versa. Now let us say that you live in California and some of your loved ones live in Pennsylvania….no problem for VoIP! You can sign up in California for a new number with the same area code as your loved ones have in Pennsylvania and they can now call you as often as they want as if it was a local call for them! I think that you are starting to see that VoIP is great and the possibilities to be creative and save money are great!

Now, let us look at some of the “cons” of VoIP. Don’t worry this list is short! There is a 911(Emergency Call) controversy going on, but 911 is available with all VoIP companies, but with some you might have to give your address for now.

With VoIP you need to have a High Speed internet connection and the reliability of your VoIP system will follow the reliability of your High Speed service provider. So, if your high speed goes down so does your phone system. You need to choose wisely here! Electrical outages will also knock out your phone system.

VoIP services are relatively speaking, based on new technology, so there will be glitches. Although, VoIP is here to stay and will only continue to improve over time! So,enjoy the many benefits(pros)of VoIP that far outnumber the disadvantages(cons).

The Dirty Little Secret behind Incident Management

For many companies incident management is a natural first step toward adopting ITIL. Unfortunately the dirty little secret behind incident management is that while companies are beginning to adopt new best practices like ITIL and proactive processes, many are neglecting to make the most of the monitoring infrastructures they already have in place.

A recent survey of IT professionals about their performance management solutions, confirms that underutilization of monitoring tools is common - but often necessary to avoid information overload. Recently, Channel Source Direct conducted telephone interviews of 195 IT professionals responsible for these systems in an Incident Management survey sponsored by Netuitive. They found that 39% of respondents said that they purposely set performance metric baselines at higher than optimal levels simply to reduce the number of alarms they receive from the system. Forty-seven percent of respondents who receive more than 100 alerts per day say that they employ this tactic to manage floods of alarms.

This means that these users are getting far less benefit than their performance monitoring software is intended to provide. By setting thresholds abnormally high, they risk missing critical early notifications of impending problems.

In fact, despite setting thresholds high, many IT organizations still struggle to avoid information overload when their performance monitoring solutions send alarms for normal system fluctuations. Overall 30% of the survey respondents said that more than half of the alerts they receive are non-critical or false. Sixteen percent reported that 70% or more of the alarms they receive are non-critical or false.

“Properly configuring and maintaining performance monitoring software is a real challenge,” explains Mike Wise, a senior solution architect and ITIL consultant at Netuitive. “To truly optimize one of these systems, you’d have to analyze and identify the normal operating ranges of hundreds of system metrics on every component in your infrastructure - plus you’d have to know how each metric typically fluctuates every hour, every day, and every month. It’s humanly impossible to optimize all this with manual thresholds or even with custom scripting.”

Many companies find that even aggressive threshold administration fails to completely eliminate their false alerting problem. Among respondents who devote 50 or more hours per quarter to thresholding, 43% say half or more of their alerts are false or non-critical and 20% say more than 70% are.

“Effective monitoring and clean, accurate problem data is crucial,” Netuitive’s Wise continues. “It’s garbage in, garbage out.’ If you fuel your ITIL processes and BSM tools with data from an underutilized performance monitoring solution, you’re just moving junk from one place to another and adding more complexity to the mess.”

How do companies overcome information overload and make the most of their systems? “To be honest - simply measuring service levels is not really what it’s about - since service levels may capture only a small part of the performing infrastructure,” explains Dennis Drogseth, Network Services Practice Leader at analyst firm Enterprise Management Associates (http://www.. “Broad analytic systems designed to validate effective performance in the face of change are coming of age on the market - but, one would have to say from this that too few IT organizations are using them yet.”

Three of the new analytics systems currently available to help companies enhance their monitoring solutions are BMC Performance Manager Intelligent Alerts from BMC Software, AppManager Performance Profiler from NetIQ, and Netuitive SI from Netuitive.

Whether they use traditional manual performance monitoring system administration techniques or new real-time analysis systems, many companies should definitely re-examine how they are using their existing incident management systems. There may be hidden value in those existing systems.

5 Tips For Buying An External Hard Drive

So you’ve finally decided to buy an external hard drive as a backup option for your computer. This is a great choice for you because you’re making backing up your data faster and easier than you could ever have imagined. You’re also making your data far more portable in larger quantities than before.

You’ll no longer be limited to storing a few hundred megabytes or even several gigabytes. Nope. Now you can look forward to portable and reliable storage capacities ranging into terabytes. That frustrating desktop computer or network file server backup job just got a whole lot easier.

If you’ve never bought an external hard disk before then there’s a few pointers here that may help to have on your shopping list before you go and make that final purchase.

1. Buy A Brand
Do yourself a huge favor and buy a brand name that you easily recognize. Sure these may cost a little more than brand x but with computer accessories like this you really do get what you pay for. If a Western Digital 100GB external drive costs $200 and another brand x 100GB drive costs $80 why do you think that is? Because the company likes you? Because they like making smaller profits? No it’s because it’s a cheaper drive made with inferior parts that’s going to break a lot sooner than you might expect.

The other aspect of sticking with a brand is your warranty. For example Maxtor, Western Digital and Iomega are all reliable companies and well known for their external hard disks. If something goes wrong with your drive you can have it fixed. With brand x you’ll probably not even be able to find an email address that you can contact the parent company on. Is saving a few dollars worth that risk?

2. Google It
Whatever brand or model you decide on make sure you do some research before purchasing. Always, always Google the exact brand and model of the drive you’re considering buying. Look for reviews and especially any feedback on how reliable a drive is. You’ll be very surprised to find that some companies have particularly bad reputations in terms of equipment reliability and what’s known as the “click of death” in the external hard drive industry.

Spend time in Google checking out your prospective purchase. You’ll be glad that you did.

3. Connectivity
When it comes to external hard drives you’ll need to choose carefully when selecting your connection types. Your external hard drive will support either USB or Firewire. Firewire is the fastest option available at the moment but your computer may not support this. The vast majority of modern computers will, however, feature a USB port.

The next question now is what type of USB port do you have - USB 1.0 or 2.0? If your computer only has a USB 1.0 port then your external hard drive is going to transfer data VERY slowly. USB 2.0 is the minimum you should consider as connection options for both your computer and your external hard drive. If you don’t have a USB 2.0 port (also called HiSpeed USB) on your computer you may need to get a USB 2.0 card fitted.

4. Speed
Now of course we need to talk about speed. The faster your hard drive operates the faster data will get transferred to your computer and vice versa. Without boggling you with comptuer jargon there’s a couple of technical things you need to include on your shopping list.

Seek time - this needs to be 10ms (milliseconds) or less

Buffer size - more is better. Get a drive with at least a 4MB buffer.

RPM - higher is better. 5400rpm as a minimum. 7200rpm being preferred.

Stick to the above basic pointers and you’ll do just fine.

5. Size
This is the simple part of the whole “buying an external hard drive” equation. Buy as much as you can afford. If you can afford 100GB then get it. However if you can afford 200GB then get it. Then again if you scraped together a few dollars more you could afford 300GB then do it.

This isn’t a sales pitch. Far from it. There is simply no such thing as having too much data storage space. The 160GB drive that I have here was filled up in a little under a month. Currently a terabye option sounds good for my future needs.

Always add 50% to your data storage requirements. Honestly. You’ll thanks yourself within the first 90 days of buying your external drive.

Hopefully now you’ll be better prepared for purchasing your new external hard drive. It’s one of the best purchases you’ll ever make.

Importance of Computer and Technology Discussion Forums

Today the world has become small village, thanks to internet and technology. The world is getting closer and closer with internet. Each day we are facing with some kind of new challenges in our life for example computer problems and virus threats. Different people think in different in different ways. Sometimes a big problem for us is smaller for other person (that is he is having the solution for that problem).

So, it becomes very vital for us to discuss our problems and new ideas with each other. If we discuss with each other what we have learned by experience then definitely the we can evolve a better society. For example if a person is facing some problem in his computer and he does not know the abc of computer. Then, it is very difficult for the Computer Company to solve his problem from their call center support. So, if there is good computer technology forum then the person can openly ask to the world for the solution for his problem. And may be somewhere in the world, somebody may have solution for his problem.

So, he can get the solution from the experience of other person. And exchange of information between the two persons is Vice-Versa. It can create a more knowledgeable society in the world. And the people will be able to interact more and more. We can take the example of latest virus and spyware attacks in the world (Blackworm, kamasutra are some examples). These virus attacks has done so much damage worldwide. So we can share our expertise with each other in the computer forums or science communities, we can create better-educated and intellectual society.

Google Joins the Internet Phone Revolution

Its not so long ago that the idea of free phone calls over the Internet would have been thought an impossibility, but as any knowledgeable user will tell you they are now commonplace. Skype the pioneer and market leader has 51 million users and a great, easy to use software package that allows your computer to make Internet phone calls between subscribers.

All you need is a reasonable computer, preferably a broadband connection but it will work over a dial up connection, and a microphone, then as long as the person you want to contact is online and also signed up to the same service, you can talk for ever for no cost.

This is possible because your speech is sent over the Internet in the data packets, just like email or any other Internet service. Microsoft, AOL, BT and Yahoo all have their own instant voice messaging services and now Google has joined in, with the launch of its instant messaging and Internet Phone service Google Talk. The service will be free to all users of its email program Gmail. This must be causing Googles competitors some concern, because as we all know from past, experience when Google does something they always want to be the market leader.

Google Talk will have the traditional uncluttered Google look which users have come to expect, to use Google Talk you must sign up for a Gmail Account. Google is making Google talk an open service, by working with EarthLink to connect with their Vling communications service and with Sipphone on using their Gizmo project, which will mean that users of Google Talk can send messages to users of other networks, unlike all their major rivals.

This means that Google Talk will be free for calls to other networks, unlike the services from AOL, Microsoft, etc where calls are only free between subscribers of their individual services. When it was announced this was seen as such a significant development that Skype immediately responded by announcing that they would also be making their network available to calls from other networks. At the moment Skype also has the advantage that its users can make calls from their computer to a landline or mobile phone, initially Google Talk will only offer Pc to PC communication, I wonder how long that will remain the case?

To start, with Google Talk will be free from adverts but that will probably change in the future, it is hoped that the launch of the service will increase the use of Gmail, where Google earns income by placing adverts targeted at the subject matter of the email.

This is a very significant step in the development of Internet phone calling services using VoIp and I expect that Google will make every effort to become the market leader.

Seven Reasons Why a Hosted Inventory Management Solution Might Be Right For Your Organization

Upgrading. Downtime. Maintenance. Hardware obsolescence. Implementation issues. The litany of headaches related to the implementation and on-going care-and-feeding of enterprise based applications is enough make the savviest of companies want to engage in anything but another software implementation. Like a full-blown IRS audit. Anything

If your organization is evaluating inventory management systems, consider that a hosted solution inventory management solution may be ideal for your needs if you feel this way. Hosted inventory management solutions such as Invendia eliminate the justified concerns of many companies that another software implementation is the last thing they want to devote resources to - capital, time, talent.

So, the top seven reasons why a hosted inventory management solution might be right for your organization?…

7. Quicker ROI. From an initial ROI perspective, hosted solutions shorten time-to-value by eliminating software implementation and cost issues. You focus on collecting your data, refining your processes, and defining your business goals.

6. Lower total-cost-of-ownership. Users of hosted inventory management solutions need not ever implement software upgrades, pay for maintenance, or add hardware. The net effect is to keep total cost of ownership in check.

5. Increased flexibility. Customers of hosted solutions subscribe for the user license they need today. As their needs change, they add or reduce the users. In this way, they never face the license over-capacity that plagues so many enterprise software deployments. Even more importantly, they increase their flexibility in responding to rapidly changing business conditions.

4. Reduced risk. Any enterprise software implementation takes time. The longer the elapsed time from project kick-off to go-live, the higher the likelihood that the project will lose momentum and management and staff support. Hosted solutions like Invendia do away with many of the preliminary steps of a software implementation (hardware selection, for example), and cause less friction and trauma within the organization. And hosted solutions offer you the advantage of single-source accountability because of the elimination of multiple vendor relationships that would be the norm in a standard enterprise software deployment.

3. Faster deployment. A faster deployment of the software is always a strong positive factor into how well it will be adopted and used by your organization. Hosted solutions typically offer faster deployments, with fewer internal pressures and distractions from day-to-day operations and activities. In short, the focus of the deployment is on end-user training and acceptance, since you won’t have to install or maintain servers, networking equipment, security products, or other hardware or software.

2. Easier innovation. Another key advantage of the hosted model is that it facilitates on-going process innovation as new functionality can be introduced incrementally over its lifecycle. The traditional model of purchased and locally implemented software binds companies into “big-bang” versioning where updates are introduced in batches - typically every 12 to 18 months. That model inhibits the real-time improvements of software and processes as they become available. In a hosted environment, major new product releases and improvements can literally be made overnight.

1. Lower cost and smoother cash-flows. Hosted solutions like Invendia have a decided cost advantage over traditional packaged software offerings like SAP and Oracle: low hardware and software costs (you need only outfit your users with PCs, which they likely already have), no depreciation costs, no software or hardware maintenance costs, and lower implementation costs.

With hosted solutions, the first year total cost of ownership can be five to ten times less expensive than enterprise software with the majority of savings resulting from the elimination of upfront integration and customization projects. Thus, the payback period is considerably shortened.

And hosted solutions offer much smoother cash-flows, with no large up-front cash outlays that need be subsumed by your organization.

So, the hosted model of enterprise software lowers risk, simplifies licensing, eases deployment, encourages innovation, and decreases costs, all of which result in faster return on investment, lower total cost of ownership, reduced risk, and the flexibility that you need to successfully compete in today’s fast-moving business climate.
