Security Process

What is ARBIL?

Asset and Risk Based INFOSEC lifecycle.

To implement a comprehensive security plan in I.T. and strategies for risk management.

What is CIA?

Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability

Confidentiality- making sure your data is available to only those allowed.

Integrity- making sure your data has not been altered in any way. Think bank transactions or chemical formulas.

Availability- making sure your data is available. Hackers often use denial of services attacks to bring down your servers or networks by overloading them with packets.

Hackers use attack trees to determine every possible entrance into your networks. This can be through modems connected to your network, routers, switches, and application vulnerabilities, almost anything connected to your internet.

Make it difficult to determine your OS, which hackers use for Banner Grabbing. This is a simple fix that many systems administrators leave.

Change your banner to display a security warning.

Many people have difficulty understanding security processes alone implementing solutions.

What is SMIRA? Simple methodology for INFOSEC based risk assessment.

Risk management is the practice and process of identifying threats and vulnerabilities to assets. This helps making the correct decisions to implement the necessary safeguards to help your organization carry out its mission.

Organizations should look at threats, vulnerabilities, assets and safeguards.

Risk Assessment

The goal is to have a list of your critical assets. Critical in understanding mission, objectives and operations and what if scenarios.

Then to implement safeguards to protect those assets.

Vulnerability Assessment

This is when you look for vulnerabilities in existing applications and determine there severity. The vulnerabilities will be rated. This includes physical security, web application reviews, policy and procedure reviews, host assessments and OS reviews, and vulnerability scans.

Threat Assessment

This is the process, of identifying existing and potential threats to assets and environments. This will also be based on severity.Where can threats come from? Disgruntled employees, script kiddies, hackers, crackers, foreign governments, and your competition. You can look for threat indicators in your server, logs, CCTV, intrusion detection systems like SNORT. http://www.snort.org

What can threats cause?

Loss of business

Death

Financial loss

Corruption of data.

Inability to work, servers down or running slowly.

Confidentiality issues.

What are assets?

User IT Operations

Staff
Connectivity
Documentation
Security Systems

Third parties

Paper

Files

Media, like disk, CD’s and USB drives.

File, Web, EMAIL, Storage, Application servers

Anything of value to the company.

Hackers like to get there hands on all information no matter how unimportant it may seem it can be used to filter out more information.

How do you protect yourself against threats and protect your assets?

Have policies and procedures in place.

Employee awareness of security issues.

Software security in place

Hardware security in place.

Physical security.

Environmental Security. I.e. water level sensors.

Communication security- to protect your phone lines, and PBX systems.

Personnel security.

There is a lot of software on the internet that allows even technically challenged people to run scans on your systems to try to crack them. Anybody that knows how to search Google can easily find such tools. The way the Internet is evolving and more and more people joining the Internet the security risks increase.

Attackers gain information on your systems by doing Domain Lookups with Whois. Port scans using many available tools to find out what you’re running and then do internet searches to find exploit code to crack your systems. Once they find out what applications you’re running it’s only a matter of time before they can crack your systems if you are not protected.

Attackers like to get information on your Domain Names, IP addresses, then they will scan your network looking for live hosts. This can be accomplished with tools like NMAP by Fyodor http://www.nmap.com . By using a tool like NMAP you can send UDP, ICMP, and TCP packets. This is done to identify host by looking at responses.

At this point attackers find out what applications are being used, or any information the host is willing to give out. The more services you have running the more opportunities for someone to remotely exploit your hosts. This can be very time consuming for the attacker. The goal is to find out what OS platforms are being run. Are they Unix, Microsoft Windows or Apple Mac OS? From here it easy much easier for someone to look for shellcode to use against your system.

Embedded DVR

In most surveillance operations using a DVR, the commonly used method is to link the DVR card to a computer containing the software. This has serious limitations in the event of a virus attack or power failure, because the surveillance system could be thrown off gear. In order to overcome these problems, a new type of DVR called the “embedded DVR” has been launched.

The embedded DVR works with very little or no help from the computer. It is a plug and play meaning that installation is very easy and recording can start as soon as the device is installed. Embedded DVRs can support 4-16 cameras, and a television screen can be added for viewing live pictures. Embedded DVRs provide all the features that come with computer based DVR systems including network support options that allow you to share the recorded data. The motion of the camera can be controlled based on motion and playback and search option are also available.

Embedded DVRs can be programmed to record at specific times. With an alarm facility available, fast detection of any intrusion can be detected. On integration with a web server, remote audio/video monitoring and recording is facilitated. Data storage is usually in MPEG format. If there is a problem with storage, a back up plan is activated where by the data is written onto CD disks. Embedded DVRs also have remote storage facility meaning storage of information can be done at a location away from where the input device is located. This can minimize data pilferage or theft.

Embedded DVRs are now used extensively in the transport sector. Specially developed embedded DVRs have in built features like impact resistance, shock & and vibration resistance are now found in trucks, school and city buses, airport shuttles, cars, taxis, etc. These DVRs are compact and take inputs provided by camera located in different parts of the automobile. It can also provide the driver with a view of the road and\or passengers at all times. In such a system, the storage device is often a replaceable hard disk drive. In some cases, a USB mobile hard disk enclosure is also provided. Use of DVRs in public and private transport devices can increase the security of passengers and cargo.

With enhanced emphasis on security, embedded DVRs have become an irreplaceable component of industrial and corporate security systems. In the near future, the embedded DVRs may find new applications many areas. The full potentials of this device are yet to be realized and it may not be a surprise to see them used by everyday people for everyday living.

DVR provides detailed information about DVR, DVR reviews, DVR cards, DVR software and more. DVR is the sister site of CD Copier Software.

PC Purchases The Benefits of Adding Network Cards

Network cards are mandatory additions to PC purchases now that even the smallest offices now have broadband Internet access and peer-to-peer networking.

Even if the cost of later purchasing Ethernet adapters a la carte were the same as the bundled prices, your clients still should get Ethernet adapters with their PC purchases.

The Benefits of Adding Network Cards to PC Purchases

When you add Ethernet adaptors to PC purchases, you and your clients won’t need to worry about compatibility between them and other hardware components in the PCs and their chosen operating system. All device driver installation and configuration hassles are already taken care of for you.

You and your clients will also have an easier time getting help from the PC vendor’s technical support department. The PC vendor should recognize the Ethernet adapter as part of the complete system and “supported” configuration. And, once again, the Ethernet adapter likely will be covered under any standard on-site system warranty agreement.

Note About Ethernet Adaptors

In many cases, Ethernet adapters are being built into the PC motherboards on desktop PCs and notebooks. Thus, there is no explicit option to include or exclude the Ethernet adapter. It just appears on the PC motherboard like a serial or parallel port.

The only downside is that, if the Ethernet adapter breaks, the PC manufacturer will need to replace the entire motherboard. If this happens after the warranty period has ended, you usually can disable the onboard Ethernet adapter and install a third-party Ethernet adapter in an available PCI or PCMCIA expansion slot.

Structural Drawing What It Is and How It’s Evolving

Structural engineers use engineering formulas relating to material properties and physics to design structures which will withstand all the forces the structures may be subject to. Examples of such forces are gravity, wind shear, stresses due to aging of materials and seismic vibration.

Structural drawings are part of the language the same structural engineers use to communicate with contractors, fabricators and regulatory bodies. These drawings describe the details of an object’s supporting members, such as beams and columns, which are designed by the structural engineer.

Structural drawings are crucial in the construction of buildings, tunnels, ships, aircraft, oil drilling platforms, bridges, retaining walls, mines, infrastructure projects, automobiles and any other object subject to significant forces.

Examples of elements described in structural drawings are beams, columns, trusses, roof framing, braces, steel connections, concrete footings, pile foundations, metal decking, joists, stairs and handrails.

Structural drawings are executed by structural draftsmen. Structural draftsmen typically work under the structural engineer responsible for the structural design. Skilled structural draftsmen convert the engineer’s sketches into CAD drawings, and also check that the designs conform to the relevant statutes and building codes.

In addition they compile material takeoffs and are responsible for keeping records of all drawings produced and transmitted downstream.

During the later half of the twentieth century, structural drawings were created on the computer using specialized software. This software created two-dimensional (”2D”) images of structures; conceptualizing the actual object in its real, three-dimensional (”3D”) form took place only in the mind. This called for highly developed spatial conceptualization abilities on the part of the concerned individuals.

But the twenty-first century saw the emergence of advanced 3D software tools for structural drafting. These tools enable draftsmen to instantaneously create a 3D element (such as an I-beam) by merely entering its dimensions. Subsequently, on the screen, the element can moved, rotated and joined with other elements just as it would be in the real world.

Once an entire object has been thus drawn from 3D elements, the software automatically creates a bill of materials, and if costs are put in by the draftsman, an itemized estimate is also output.

All this translates to shorter turnaround times for the production of drawings and more accuracy in the drawing itself.

Since the time structural drawings were created on computers, they were stored in electronic form. With advances in network communication, paperless transmission of drawings from one node in a network to another became possible. The network now encircles the world (as the Internet) and structural drawings are transmitted between countries quickly and easily.

Using additional collaboration software, structural drawings are now created by teams separated by thousands of miles, faster, more accurately and with more creative input than at any time in human history. No wonder a structure can be designed in the US, drawn in India and built in the Middle East!

The Great Debate DISH Network or DirecTV

Having been a DISH Network customer since 1997, I thought I’d share my thoughts and opinions about the competition between DISH Network and DirecTV.

First of all, there really isn’t a huge difference between the two systems. It all comes down to what you want for programming. They both offer much the same things, but there are a couple of things one has over the other. For example, DirecTV has NFL Sunday Ticket and Dish Network doesn’t, but they both have NHL Center Ice. As a Canadian, that’s a plus.

They both have the same amount of Pay-Per-View channels, but DirecTV has about 30 more 100% digital channels than Dish Network. Both provide High Definition programming and that’s the hot thing now. When I watch a hockey or football game on ESPN and then turn to the same game on ESPN-HD, there’s NO comparison. HD is like watching the show like you’re actually there. The picture is crystal clear and bright. DiscoveryHD and HDNET are the best for this type of viewing.

Another thing I love about satellite is my DVR recorder. I can watch one show, and record another. I also like that when I record a show in HD, it plays back in HD. Remember those days when you’d tape a show, only to play it back with bad tracking and crappy picture quality? Ugh, I don’t miss those days at all. In fact my VCR is sitting in our garage collecting dust.

And let’s not forget that you can pause live TV. That’s right. I can hit the pause button, go tend to something for however long, come back and resume what I’m watching without missing a thing. Both systems have this awesome feature and it’s worth every penny.

This leads me to the final point of this article; pricing and options. Both companies offer quick and free installation. In fact, DISH Network boasts that they’ll install a system within 24 hours! Both offer a free HD DVR upgrade and DirecTV offers the first month of programming free on their most popular package. DISH Network is offering $100 back AND 3 months free of STARZ movie pack.

So there you have it. If you’re looking to switch to satellite from cable, I hope this article has helped you in the decision making process. Both systems are excellent, and it just comes down to what you want, as the prices and programming is similar between the two systems.

Networking Terms Educating the Client

It is very important to educate your small business prospects and clients on key small business networking terms and buzzwords. After all, in order to “win them over,” you need to be speaking the same language. In fact, you may even want to prepare a “cheat sheet”, based on the below definitions, to help you in your prospect and client pre-sales activities.

If you’d like to order a license to reproduce these networking terms for client sales literature, please contact questions@ComputerConsulting101.com and put “Licensing Your LAN Buzzwords” in the subject line.

802.11a - wireless Ethernet standard that allows for data networking transmission at up to 54Mbps; operates in the 5-6Ghz range.

802.11b - most mature of the widely available wireless Ethernet standards that allows for data networking transmission at up to 11Mbps; ; also commonly referred to as a “WiFi”; operates in the 2.4Ghz range

802.11g - newest in-progress wireless Ethernet standard that promises to allow for data networking transmission at up to 54Mbps, operates in the same 2.4Ghz range as 802.11b-based Wireless Ethernet networks.

CAT5 (Category 5 Cable) - copper, unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cabling that can support voice and data communications at speeds up to 100Mbps and 1000Mbps for Ethernet networking.

Client/Server Network - a network in which a dedicated server is used to share resources.

Ethernet Network Adapter - due to the market dominance of Ethernet networks, an Ethernet network adapter has become largely synonymous with the more general term network adapter or network interface card.

IDE (integrated drive electronics) is a more mainstream, lower-cost interface (than SCSI) for connecting internal peripherals — generally hard drives, CD-ROM drives and tape backup drives.

LAN (Local Area Network) - set of computer systems and peripheral devices connected for sharing resources and providing near instantaneous communications; today’s small business LANs are typically physically connected using Ethernet network adapters and Category 5 cabling; when extended to one or more additional geographic locations, can become a metropolitan area network (MAN) or wide area network (WAN).

Network Integrator - a computer services business that designs, installs and maintains heterogeneous computer systems and software; many computer consultants are also network integrators (and vice versa).

How To Become A Cisco VPN Specialist

There’s quite an emphasis on security in today’s networks, and that’s reflected in Cisco’s certification tracks. Cisco offers a CCIE Security track and the Cisco Certified Security Professional (CCSP) intermediate-level certification, but there is no real equivalent to the CCNA on the security side. Instead, Cisco offers several different Security Associate certifications.

The good news is that you’ve got a lot of security specializations from which to choose; the bad news is that you’ve got a lot of choices! In choosing a specialization, take some time to choose a certification that will be of practical use to you in your current position or in your “dream job”.

One of the more popular Security Associate certifications is the Cisco VPN Specialist certification. This two-exam track consists of a Securing Cisco Network Devices (SND, 642-551) exam and a Cisco Secure Virtual Private Networks (CSVPN, 642-511) exam. To earn the Cisco VPN Specialist exam, you must hold a valid CCNA certification.

What should you expect on these exams? On the SND exam, expect to be grilled on basic security features on both switches and routers, as well as VPN 3000 concentrators, PIXes, and IDS/IPS Sensors. You’ll need to be ready to configure and troubleshoot basic AAA configurations, access-lists, syslog, AutoSecure, and much more. You should also be solid with IPSec.

IPSec will also be part of your CSVPN exam. As you’d expect, you’ll also be expected to be quite good with the VPN 3000 Concentrator series, including browser configuration, creating users and group, the Windows VPN Software Client, and more.

This is a demanding certification that is an excellent addition to your resume and your skill set. For the latest on this and other Cisco certifications, you should regularly visit the Learning & Events section of Cisco’s website. As a Cisco certification candidate, it’s your responsibility to stay current of any additions and changes to Cisco’s certification paths - and it’s good for your career!

Build A Successful Business By Staying Connected

Stay connected using your phone.

Have a cell phone, keep it charged and use it. Sometimes you don’t want to look at, think about or pick up that lead pipe, but believe me, it will make or break your business. Thinking you will call someone later, after thinking about them and not picking up incoming phone calls are two dooms to disaster, your whole success in business will be based on your ability and motivation to pick up the phone and use it as your most resourceful to tool success, stay connected to people using your phone.

Email is too good to be true.

Email is fast, free, convenient, personal and non-chalant. It is fast, one of the fastest means of communication. I send a message faster than you can pick up the phone, dial, let it ring, and get a real person on the other end. Literally in the blink of an eye, I can send a message anywhere in the world for free! It is also one of the most convenient means of communication, this power tool can be found in cafes, libraries, living rooms, offices, everywhere, anywhere a computer is and we both know we are surrounded by computers everywhere. It is personal because you really feel like you are getting to know the other person. I have had times where I email back and forth with someone a few times, finally make contact by phone and when we talk, it feels like we are old buddies sitting down for a beer! It is also non-chalant, which means that you don’t have to be formal, just a question or short response is necessary sometimes. Use email to build relationships and stay connected.

Use Instant Messengers

Instant Messengers are a quick and easy way to stay connected. Instant messengers are computer software that connects directly with other computers using a downloaded software. Like email it is fast, free, convenient, personal and non-chalant, but the difference is, you are both connected online at the same time. It is like me calling my friend and telling him to go to his email box and hit receive, than he replies and sends, I read it and send, but at the end, both our Inboxes would be filled will a lot of unnecessary messages. Instead with instant messenger, you are always connected to the service when you are online and choose to talk with people. If you are online and your friend is online, you can ‘hit them up’ (slang for saying hi) on messenger and you can start an instant conversation of short messages that you type. Pretty cool. I use instant messengers for personal and business use. For personal, to talk with friends quickly and easily, and business because it is quick and easy. Basically, I like instant messengers because they are a quick and easy way to stay connected. You will too!

Cell Phone Text Messages

Young people nowadays are pretty hip to text messages, but professional, business people should be to. ‘Textin’ is really a simple task and you can blast a short text message to everyone in your phone book at the click of a button. A few years ago in college, I was a musician and used to get ‘texts’ from people all night long on friday and saturday night to come check out their bands play. Then after college one of my tech savvy friends own a multimedia event company. He is a very connected person and his cell phone is filled with my great numbers….people. Every time now that he puts on an event, and believe me, his events are always awesome and he uses a body painter to paint beautiful women, his shows are the bomb…he sends out a ‘text’ with a few clicks of the buttons and ‘bham!’ tons of people all over the city of Chicago are notified and his response rates are tremendous when he does this. Probably 2-3 times more people show up when he does this. Combine this with an email blast and you are ready to party!

Start Blogging and Don’t Stop

You have probably heard all the hype lately about blogging. Blogging is one of the very best ways to stay connected in the digital age. A blog is a website where you write stuff and anyone can read it. Many businesses use blogs to keep their customers and investors up-to-date with all the latest news and events. Normal people use them also to write about their lives, products, ideas, experiences, etc. The place to go to start your own blog for free is Blogger.com, which is owned by Google. Sign up and start a blog for your business, link to it on your website and in your emails and most of all get personal. Many people recently are turning to searching blogs as opposed to search engines for information. Search engines have become so manipulated by people trying to get higher rankings, while blogs is an alternative that give you a different source of information, something personal and untainted. Start your blog and you will see how amazing it can be to have an outlet like this for your business to stay connected.

Free FPS Sauerbraten

Sauerbraten (AKA Cube 2) is a free online multiplayer first person shooter. OK, so maybe the name doesn’t roll off your tongue, and perhaps the idea of a free first person shooter isn’t original; but, Sauerbraten offers something most free games don’t have: an active online community that you can play against 24/7.

The main “selling point” of this game is that it has an active community. People go online and beat the crap out of each other on a daily basis. You’re almost never waiting around for someone else to get online, like other free multiplayer games. You can jump on, play a few rounds of death match, and get back to work — or you can stay up all night in a gory frag-fest.

Of course, that frag-fest doesn’t come without a price. The networking side of Sauerbraten has a dual personality. At time, networking code in Sauerbraten isn’t as robust as some of the retail games out there; at times you’ll find yourself facing the wrong way, inside of a wall, or in the middle of nowhere. And for all of its failures in networking, Sauerbraten seems to shine when you’re engaged in a massive battle with 16 or more people engaged.

The game itself uses the standard WSAD key combination for movement, space for jump, and mouse for aim/fire. In other words, Sauerbraten isn’t going to win any awards for originality or creativity; but, for those of us who are used to the current generation of FPS games, the control scheme works flawlessly.

The audio in the game is, well, annoying. For me, I was forced to disable the in-game audio and play my own mix of MP3 in place. I wouldn’t classify the audio as bad, as in the right situation it could be excellent, but the repetitive use of two songs and the same sound for gunfire gets really old, really fast. Unfortunately, this isn’t limited to Sauerbraten, as many free online multiplayer games have this flaw.

Countering the flaws in the audio department are Sauerbraten’s graphics. I’ll admit, you’re not going to get Xbox 360-quality graphics out of this game, but the textures are used very effectively and nothing feels out of place. The textures are also fairly colorful and have an overall quality to them that helps the game flow well. You’re not going to see Halo 2-level bump mapping, but since the game is so fast paced, you probably wont even notice the graphics.

Gameplay is fast paced and hardcore in Sauerbraten. You spawn quickly and die even quicker. There’s almost no escaping the fact that no matter how good you are at Counterstrike, Halo, or Unreal, because Sauerbraten is just that much more difficult. The pace of the game is so fast to a fault: newcomers will have a difficult time mastering the game as they get used to the near-epilepsy-inducing speed of the game. Of course, once you do get the timing of the game down, the fast pace only adds to the addictiveness of the game.

Overall, Sauerbraten is a top-notch game. It does have a weak singleplayer mode, but that can be forgiven, since you’ll spend many hours blowing things up.

What is Groupware

Vince Lombardi once said that, “The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.” If this is the case, then what do we need to do in order to insure success in our companies? How can we combine the efforts of each individual as Mr. Lombardi said was so key to the success of a particular organization? While there are many possible solutions to these questions, I have found something that will help your company become more organized, and your employees more unified in their work. I am talking about groupware.

What is Groupware?

Groupware is software that facilitates the communication between the members of a network workgroup. It allows people within a company, whether they are physically in the same location or in several locations all over the world, to share documents, information, and data. It allows them to collaborate on ideas and projects, by allowing them to essentially work on the same page at the same time. With groupware there is no limit to the number of people that can work on the same project without creating duplicate ideas and work. Since groupware can track all document information, you will never wonder if you are using the latest version of a document.

What about CSCW?

If you have ever heard anything about groupware, you have probably also heard of CSCW. CSCW stands for Computer Supported Cooperative Work and is the study of groupware, i.e. how it is designed, developed, adopted, and used. People that are involved with the study of CSCW not only include software designers and computer scientists, but also researchers and people that study organizational behavior.

How does Groupware differ from the Traditional User Interface?

Where a traditional user interface generally focuses on the use of only one person, groupware relates to groups and understanding how people work and function in a group. Groupware is also more focused on the ease of use for the user because the system must be more responsive as the pace of a particular application is generally driven by the pace of the conversation. Other factors, such as the size of the group, and the roles that people play are taken into consideration when designing groupware.

What can Groupware do for you?

Groupware has many functions and can be a very useful tool to keep your company organized and your employees working in unity. While there are many advantages to using groupware I have listed a few key ideas below. By having some sort of groupware in your company you can allow your employees to:

Share information

Keep common schedules

Manage e-mail

Maintain bulletin boards

Have several people work on one document

Write Collectively

Hold real-time network meetings

Share files

Share calendars

Share database access

Share spreadsheets

Have electronic conferencing

Have cooperative project management

As you can see, there are several advantages to using groupware to keep your company more organized and unified. Groupware will allow your employees to collaborate on information, ideas, and many other facets of their work and allow them to be more effective, productive, and organized. We already know that when we combine the efforts of each individual in an organization, we will see greater achievements and more success. If your company could benefit from groupware, then I encourage you to find out more about it and explore different possibilities to see which one will fit your needs the best. It will be one of the best decisions you will make with regard to the organization of your company documents, ideas, and information.
