Router - How It Works

If you’ve been brought up in the 21st century then you probably take a lot of things for granted that 30 years ago people just didn’t have. One of those things is the Internet and its ability to be able to connect people from all over the world and allow them to interact with each other in a variety of ways including sending email, visiting web sites, joining forums, attending online chats and countless other things. But none of this would be possible if it weren’t for a device that most people have never seen and probably don’t even know exist, called a router.

Routers are pieces of equipment that send messages from everyone connected to the network along thousands of different pathways. We’re going to take a behind the scenes look at exactly how these routers work.

Let’s say you’re sending an email to a friend of yours who is living across country or even in another part of the world. How does the email know to end up on your friend’s computer instead of all the other millions of computers all over the world? A good part of the work to get these messages from one computer to another is handled by routers. Rather than pass messages within networks, routers pass messages from one network to another.

To get an idea of how this works, let’s take a very simple example.

Let’s say you have two departments. Department A with 5 employees and Department B with 5 employees. Let’s say that Employee 1 from Department A wants to send an email to Employee 3 at Department B. Each department is part of its own network of computers. A router links the two networks together so that they can communicate with each other. It is the only piece of equipment that sees both networks. Many people ask, why not just make one network? The simple answer is that if the two departments do two completely different jobs for the company and send massive amounts of info within the department, you don’t want to slow down the other department with the one department’s info. To ease what they call the “traffic burden” the two departments are separated into two networks with a router put between them to connect them just in case they do want to communicate for some reason.

The way the router knows what to send where is with what is called a configuration table. These configuration table consists of info on which connections lead to which addresses, priorities for each connection, and rules for how to handle the passing of info between networks. The router then has two basic jobs. The main task is to make sure that information doesn’t go where it’s not needed so that the volume of data doesn’t clog up the network and the next task is to make sure the information goes to where it’s supposed to go.

To simplify how this happens, the router looks at the destination address of each packet sent from the source location. It checks its table to see where this address is and sends each packet to that address, bypassing all the other addresses in the network so as not to slow the network down.

Top Tips for Downloading Movies, Games & Music Online

My previous article looked at the basics of Downloading Movies, Games & Music Online and explained what peer-to-peer (or P2P) Networks can do. No 1. Pick a ‘healthy’ file to download

Perform a search with your downloading software and you will usually get a number of results. Make sure you pick the one with best quality (or health) rating. This is is the best indication of the number of users sharing the file. Your software will then download different parts of the file simultaneously ensuring a much faster download time without interruptions.

No 2. Pick the largest file to download

Larger files are likely to be of a higher quality than the smaller files which can be fragmented. Use both the quality (or health) of the file and its size to determine which one of the search results you should download. They make take longer to download but the results are definitely worth it.

No 3. Download your files overnight

Downloading large files is likely to use up a considerable amount of your computer’s memory, no matter how fast your machine or internet connection. It is a good idea therefore to queue up your downloads overnight. It is possible to download 2-3 movies a night or a hundred or so MP3’s with a broadband internet connection. Don’t forget to turn off your computer’s power or standby mode options to ensure no interruptions.

No 4. Keep trying

When using any kind of P2P software your search results will depend on the contents of the shared folders of the people who are connected to the P2P network at the time and therefore your search results will change. You may be looking for something that is quite unusual or rare, so try your search again at another time.

No 5. You can download more than movies, games & music

If it’s on the Internet you can find a huge amount of great stuff from TV shows, pictures and art, CD/DVD cover images and sleeves to MP3 players and movie players. You can also get applications and software, anti-virus and pop-up blockers, etc.

Portability: VoIP has a portable system. You can use it permanently at your house, or you can travel along with it. All you need is access to a high speed broadband connection. Flexibility: The VoIP system is highly flexible which means that it can adjust well to your personal needs. If you need more lines you can upgrade your system at low cost and vice versa.

Router - Tracing Your Packets

Few people will really care about the path that your packet takes when sending a message, but if you’re one of those high tech egg heads then this article may be of great interest to you. It can become very addictive so proceed with caution.

If you’re using a Microsoft Windows based operation system, then it’s very easy to trace the route that your message has taken. Not only that, you can see exactly how many routers it took to get your message from point A to point B. You can do this by using a program that is on your computer called Traceroute. That is exactly what the program does. It traces the route a message takes to get to its final destination.

To run the program you have to go to a DOS prompt. After doing this, go to the C:windows directory and type tracert followed by the URL of the Internet site you’re connected to at the time. It will give you a rather technical spec sheet of every IP address it stopped at along the way until it got to its final destination.

The first number on the spec sheet tells you how many routers it went through to get to its final destination. Then each individual router listed on the page is numbered from 1 down to the last one which is actually the final destination. The next 3 numbers on each line for each router shows how long the packet took to get to that router. The next piece of information on each line is the actual name of the router the information went through. Yes, routers have names. This may be important to the users but is totally irrelevant to the router itself. Finally, the last piece of info on each line is the actual IP address of the router itself.

The amount of time it takes information to get from one router to another varies depending on how much traffic there is on that route at the time. Normally, it is no more than a couple of seconds. But occasionally, it can be longer. That is why sometimes you will be trying to access a web site and it seems to take forever. This can be for a number of reasons, but usually it is because along the way one of the routers is not working correctly and has to be bypassed. Sometimes the actual final location itself is down or having problems and the delay is the last router in the chain trying to connect to the network.

Traceroute is not limited to just checking the number of routers between you and an Internet site. You can use it to check the number of routers between you and any other computer on a network. As long as you know the IP address of the other computer you can trace the route of the packets between you and the other computer.

This delegation can free up some time to go out to networking events, planning, marketing campaigns, going out on sales call and making follow-up phone calls.

Unfortunately, if you’re already working a ton of hours, you somehow just need to find the time. Think through your time management challenges. Look at where you really spend the bulk of your time every week and figure out if there are a few things that you can delegate to free up some time for the marketing. Really plan how you’re going to develop this part of your consulting business.

Windows Vista Will You Be One of the 39 Percent

39% of businesses will install it within the first 12 months of it’s debut. And of those businesses, 19% will install it within the first 6 months (InformationWeek Magazine, Oct. 2006). One thing is certainit will change with way you do business. Are you ready for Microsoft’s Windows Vista?

What is Windows Vista you ask?

Due for its release in November 2006 (next month) Microsoft Windows Vista is an operating system. In layman’s terms, an operating system can be explained like the foundation of a home. You cannot build a home without first building the foundation. The same principle applies to Microsoft Windows Vista. Windows is the most fundamental and essential piece of a user’s computer. Without an Operating System, programs like Word, Excel, email, Quickbooks, Peachtree, and the Internet will not work.

Three ways Vista will improve business productivity:

1. Protect your files: Computer viruses are not the only thing you need to protect yourself from anymore. Vista includes features that greatly reduce the vulnerability to threats such as viruses, spyware, worms, phishing attacks, and other potentially unwanted software. This will increase workstation uptime and reduce administrative costs over time. Also, Vista comes with a feature called BitLocker. BitLocker addresses a growing concern of theft or unwanted disclosure of data made available through physical loss of computer devices (i.e. your company laptop).

2. Performance Boost: Windows Vista includes radically new and redesigned performance enhancements:

The need for SPEED…to resume work: Turn your laptops on in less than 3 seconds!

Vista gets to know you: Vista learns what things you do most often, and even differentiates which applications you are likely to use at different times (for example, on the weekend versus during the week), so that your computer is ready to do what you want it to do.

Add more kick to your pc in seconds: Vista allows users to use a removable flash memory device, such as a USB thumb drive, to improve system performance without opening the computer.

Less moving parts means more reliability: Vista utilizes a new way computers will be built moving forward. New computers will have flash memory (similar to the memory used in digital cameras) built into something called a hybrid hard drive. Basically, computer files can be accessed from flash memory faster than from the mechanical hard disk. You will have less risk of hardware problems with the hard disk when you’re on the move because the information will be saved on the flash memory stick first.

3. A better Internet: Internet Explorer is software used to view information on the web. Currently, Internet Explorer holds 85% global market share (Firefox is second with 12% global market share). Simply put, most people in the world use Internet Explorer and the newest release of Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer 7) will be bundled with Vista. Internet Explorer’s new design has significant benefits which enhance Internet security and increase employee productivity.

Business Outlook on Vista:

In order to have a smooth transition from Windows XP to Windows Vista, most computers will need additional memory added (i.e. RAM), especially if you want to benefit from the new Flip3-D interface enhancement! If your company is considering the purchase of new computers, look for pc vendors like Dell, HP, and IBM to issue a “Vista Certified” seal indicating that they will be compatible with Vista. This will ensure a more efficient upgrade path. Also, if your company runs any programs that are older than 5 years, make sure you test them on Windows Vista to ensure they will still run.

Compatibility:

The most common issues you will encounter is compatibility with your existing video card that your computer uses (i.e. the piece of your computer that displays the colors to your monitor) and compatibility issues with your sound card (i.e. the ability to hear sound from your computer). If you’d like to check your existing computer’s compatibility with Windows Vista, go to Microsoft’s website and download the Windows Vista compatibility tool from Microsoft to determine what potential issues you may run into to prepare for the update to Windows Vista. This will give you an easy to understand list of potential issues you will need to address before you upgrade.

How Peer to Peer (P2P) Works

Peer to Peer (P2P) Technology- How it works:

Ever wondered how P2P works? This guide will run down most of the major P2P services and how they work. Peer to Peer technology lets people share files over a network on the internet. Most people now use what is known as the second generation of P2P, which is unlike its predecessors like such as Napter, the second generation has no centralized server, making it harder for it to shut down.

How first generation P2P services worked:

A connection is established by a peer finding another peer to connect to. Each peer exchanges active peer and their addresses. When a connection has been established, the user can then search for files. When a search has been submitted, it connects to all nodes on its connection list. The results are then displayed and a connection is made.

How second generation P2P services worked:

Gnutella2: Hubs are used to quickly search for files, eliminating the original “find peer and search” method. Instead, they store a list of files on all the “Leaves” (A peer) that are connected to it, thus dramatically reducing search time.
Advantages: Unlike Napster, if a hub crashes, it’s network stays alive.
Disadvantages: Doesn’t make network any more durable than the first generation of P2P.
Gnutella2: www.gnutella.com

FastTrack: Programs such as Kazaa and iMesh use the FastTrack protocol. Normal peers connect to a supernode which acts jsut like a hub. Supernodes also connect to other supernodes, allowing search requests to move through the network very quickly. Peers then establish a direct connection to a client after a file has been found.
Advantages: Any client can become a supernode.
Disadvantages: Corruption of files occur.
Clients include: Kazaa (www.kazaa.com), iMesh (www.imesh.com)

BitTorrent: .torrent files are used to store information about the file being shared. Once a torrent file is opened, the client connects to the tracker which tells the client where the file is located and what other peers/seeders there are. BitTorrent works by chunks of small files being transferred (even through multiple connections), while you are downloading. The files are checked for corruption as the download continues. Leechers are people who download and don’t upload, and are highly frowned upon on some sites, disallowing them from downloading any further.
Advantages: Very fast for popular, new files.
Disadvantages: Trackers are unreliable and if it goes down, the file is lost.
Clients include: Azureus (www.azureus.com), Shareaza (www.shareaza.com).

EDonkey Network: Edonkey runs on the same principle as first generation P2P, only anybody can become a server. Clients communicate with the server to download files, and random chunks can be downloaded in any order then put together in the end.
Advantages: No file corruption, leech penalization.
Disadvantages: It can penalize users unfairly.
